Loma Vista’s Dr. Rae Cherng featured on San Francisco Bay Area KTVU television about a recent birth control pill recall and what women should do about it. 

Loma Vista’s Dr. Rae Cherng was recently featured on San Francisco Bay Area television station KTVU (channel 2) about a recent birth control pill recall. Dr. Cherng talked about what women who take birth control pills should do in light of the recall.

The action recommended by Dr. Cherng for women taking one of the varieties of the Qualitest Pharmaceuticals pills:

• Stop taking the pills immediately and call your physician
• Options for intercourse
• Stop having intercourse until you have talked with your physician about the recalled pills and what to do next
• Use condoms
• Use a non-hormonial form of birth control until your next period
• After your next period you can start with a new packet of pills

The voluntary recall affects eight kinds of birth-control pills manufactured by Qualitest Pharmaceuticals, including a variety of generic brands, such as:

• Cyclafem
• Emoquette
• Gildess
• Orsythia
• Previfem
• Tri-Previfem
• And an estimated 1.4 million packs of pills that started getting shipped out last year.

Qualitest Pharmaceuticals is recalling multiple lots of the birth-control pills because of a packaging error. Qualitest said the error caused the weekly tablet orientation to be reversed and obscured the pills' lot numbers and expiration dates on certain packages. None of the recalled pills has expired.
